John Steinbeck movie ephemera, 1939-1982.

Movie stills (East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, & Tortilla Flat), movie posters (Cannery Row, 1982; The Red Pony, 1957; The Pearl, 1948; and Grapes of Wrath, an undated reproduction), original lobby cards (1 Tortilla Flat, and 8 Red Pony), color copies of lobby cards (2 Grapes of Wrath, 2 East of Eden, and 2 Of Mice and Men), cigarette cards (Grapes of Wrath), and four LIFE magazine issues, each featuring an article (or two, in the case of Grapes of Wrath) on a movie. The issues are: 1939 June 5 (with some of Horace Bristol's photographs captioned by John Steinbeck), 1940 Feb 19 (more Horace Bristol photographs), 1940 Jan. 8 (photos from play and movie Of Mice and Men), and 1942 June 1 (photos from film Tortilla Flat).

In 1938 Bristol was a young LIFE photographer who had planned to do a photographic book on migratory labor in California. Steinbeck had agreed to collaborate by writing the captions and limited text.
